HCF means Highest Common Factor. LCM means Lowest Common Multiple. These help in grouping, sharing, and finding common sizes in Mathematics.

Lesson Note: HCF and LCM

Highest Common Factor (HCF) is the greatest number that can divide two or more numbers exactly.

Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) is the smallest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers.

HCF is used when we want to share items into equal groups without remainder. LCM is used when we want to find when events repeat together or when items meet at the same time.

Example 1: Find the HCF of 12 and 18.

Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12. Factors of 18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18. The highest common factor is 6.

Example 2: Find the LCM of 4 and 6.

Multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, ... Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, ... The lowest common multiple is 12.

Example 3: Find the HCF of 15 and 25.

Factors of 15: 1, 3, 5, 15. Factors of 25: 1, 5, 25. The HCF is 5.

Example 4: Find the LCM of 3 and 5.

Multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, ... Multiples of 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, ... The LCM is 15.

Example 5: Find the HCF and LCM of 8 and 12.

Factors of 8: 1, 2, 4, 8. Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12. HCF is 4. Multiples show the LCM is 24.
