Fractions show parts of a whole or a set. They are written using a numerator and a denominator.

Lesson Note: Fractions

A fraction is a number that represents part of a whole. The top number is the numerator and the bottom number is the denominator.

Examples of fractions include 1/2, 3/4, 2/5, and 5/8.

Fractions may be proper, improper, or mixed numbers. They can also be equivalent or written in lowest terms.

Example 1: Identify the numerator and denominator in 3/7.

The numerator is 3 and the denominator is 7.

Example 2: Simplify 4/8 to its lowest terms.

Divide both numbers by 4. 4/8 = 1/2.

Example 3: Write an equivalent fraction for 1/2 with denominator 6.

Multiply numerator and denominator by 3. 1/2 = 3/6.

Example 4: Arrange 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 in ascending order.

Ascending order is 1/4, 1/2, 3/4.

Example 5: Add 1/3 and 1/3.

1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3.
