Understanding Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs

Verb is a word that shows action, state or occurrence. Examples: run, eat, is, become.

Adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. Examples: tall, beautiful, bright.

Adverb is a word that modifies a verb, adjective or another adverb. Examples: quickly, very, carefully.

Describes how, when, where or to what extent.

Tip: A quick way to identify a word class is to ask what job the word is doing in the sentence.

Verb

A verb is a word used to show action, state of being or occurrence. Without a verb, a sentence cannot express what the subject is doing or what is happening.

Types of verbs

Action verbs: run, write, sing.

Linking verbs: is, am, are, was, were.

Helping verbs: has, have, do, will, can.

Place: here, there, everywhere

Degree: very, quite, too, almost
