Latest updates on education in Nigeria — How to get enrolled (UTME, Direct Entry, Post‑UTME)

A practical, step‑by‑step guide for prospective candidates. Copy this into your blog post on Edwin Ogie Library.

At a glance — what's new (Jan 2026)

  • JAMB has opened the sale and registration window for the 2026 UTME/DE cycle — check the JAMB portal for exact dates and CBT locations.
  • Federal Government and ASUU reached an agreement aiming to end the cycle of prolonged university strikes — this is important as it reduces disruptions to academic calendars.
  • Universities continue to run Post‑UTME / screening exercises on their own portals; deadlines differ by school.

Essential resources (official)

  • JAMB main portal — jamb.gov.ng
  • JAMB e‑facility (login / profile / CAPS) — efacility.jamb.gov.ng
  • Use university portals for Post‑UTME and screening (e.g., check the official website of the university you apply to).

Step‑by‑step: How to get enrolled (UTME route)

  1. Get your NIN (National Identification Number). The NIN is required to create your JAMB profile code and to register. If you do not have one, apply through the NIMC enrolment centers before registration windows.
  2. Create your JAMB profile code (profile code generation). Generate your profile code using your 11‑digit NIN as instructed by JAMB (this allows biodata retrieval from NIMC). Keep the profile code safely; it cannot be changed after generation.
  3. Buy the e‑PIN or visit an accredited centre. Purchase your e‑PIN (or visit an accredited CBT centre) to register for UTME/DE. Complete the registration at an accredited JAMB centre where biometric capture and identity checks will be done.
Documents to bring: NIN slip, valid ID (voter’s card, driver's license, international passport or national ID), recent passport photograph, and payment method.
  4. Choose the right subjects and course carefully. Pick subject combinations required for your intended course and choose preferred institutions correctly (you can change course/institution later through the JAMB portal during the allowed window).
  5. Sit the UTME exam. Prepare using the approved syllabus and attend the CBT centre on your scheduled date and time.
  6. Check your results and apply for Post‑UTME (if required). After results, some universities require Post‑UTME screening (online tests, screening forms, or interviews). Follow each institution’s official portal for application windows and fees.
  7. Monitor JAMB CAPS — accept or reject admission offers. Admissions are uploaded to JAMB CAPS where you can accept or reject offers. You can accept using CAPS or by sending the required ACCEPT/REJECT SMS from the SIM used at registration (follow the JAMB instructions).
  8. Complete school admission acceptance, payment and clearance. Once you accept an offer, follow the institution’s instructions: pay acceptance fees, submit/verify original documents (O'Level result, birth certificate/affidavit, jamb admission letter), and complete clearance and registration with the school.

Direct Entry (DE) pathway — overview

If you have A‑Level, JUPEB, NCE, ND (with relevant credit) or other approved qualifications, you may apply via Direct Entry. DE registration follows a similar e‑pin and CBT profile process; check the JAMB Direct Entry guidelines.

Change of course / institution

JAMB allows a one‑time change of course/institution during the window announced each year. This is done either via your JAMB profile on the e‑facility or at an accredited centre (fees and timelines apply).

Post‑admission checklist (what to have ready)

  • Original O'Level certificates (WAEC/NECO or equivalents) and photocopies
  • UTME result slip and JAMB admission letter
  • Birth certificate or sworn affidavit
  • Passport photographs (as required by the school)
  • Evidence of payment for acceptance and tuition (keep receipts)

Practical tips & common mistakes

  • Only use JAMB‑accredited CBT centres — scammers sometimes claim to guarantee admission.
  • Ensure names on all documents match exactly (O'Level, JAMB, and school records).
  • Upload O'Level results early if you are using awaiting results — some schools require uploaded results by a specific deadline.
  • Follow official portals and social media channels of JAMB and your target universities for deadline changes.
