Introduction to Percentages
A percentage is a fraction expressed as parts per hundred. The symbol % means "per hundred." To convert a fraction or decimal to a percentage, multiply by 100; to convert a percentage to a decimal, divide by 100.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Convert 0.45 to %
0.45×100 = 45%
Example 2: Convert 3/5 to %
3/5=0.6; 0.6×100 = 60%
Example 3: Find 25% of 200
25/100×200 = 50
Example 4: 80% of 50 = ?
80/100×50 = 40
Example 5: 120 is what % of 150?
(120/150)×100 = 80%
Example 6: Increase 200 by 15%
15% of 200=30; 200+30 = 230
Example 7: Decrease 80 by 25%
25% of 80=20; 80−20 = 60
Example 8: What percent of 60 is 15?
(15/60)×100 = 25%
