Introduction to Fractions

A fraction represents a part of a whole or any number of equal parts. It consists of a numerator (top number) and a denominator (bottom number).

Types of Fractions

  • Proper Fraction: Numerator < Denominator (e.g., 3/4)
  • Improper Fraction: Numerator >= Denominator (e.g., 5/3)
  • Mixed Number: Whole number + proper fraction (e.g., 1 2/3)
  • Equivalent Fractions: Different fractions representing same value (e.g., 1/2 = 2/4)
  • Unit Fraction: Numerator is 1 (e.g., 1/5)

Worked Examples

Example 1: Identify type: 2/7

2<7 → Proper Fraction.

Example 2: Convert improper 7/4 to mixed.

7÷4=1 R3 → 1 3/4.

Example 3: Write 1 2/5 as improper.

1×5+2=7/5.

Example 4: Simplify 8/12.

Divide by 4 → 2/3.

Example 5: Equivalent to 3/9?

Divide by 3 → 1/3.

Example 6: Convert 0.25 to fraction.

0.25=25/100=1/4.

Example 7: Add 1/3 + 1/6.

LCD=6: 2/6+1/6=3/6=1/2.

Example 8: Subtract 5/8 - 1/4.

1/4=2/8:5/8-2/8=3/8.

Example 9: 2/3 ÷ 4.

2/3×1/4=2/12=1/6.

Example 10: Multiply 3/5 × 10.

3/5×10=30/5=6.
